For the interim President of the Theatre Arts & Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), newly formed by the breakaway members of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), Mr. Yemi Solade, controversies seem to have become a style. Some say the fine actor simply loves to be in the news. And almost every story about him in the media gets much attraction.
The latest about Yemi has to do with a debt of about N100,000 he reportedly owes an Abeokuta, Ogun State tailor, one Mr. Bako Omorilewa.
This matter is generating ripples now that, we heard, Yemi’s colleagues who know about it are taking steps to save him from further public embarrassment.
The tailor who runs Bako Fashion which is based within Kampala Shops at Itoku market, Abeokuta, was said to have been introduced to the actor by a fellow actor popularly called Olaiya Igwe.
To convince him of his expertise, the tailor claimed that he first sewed some clothes free for Yemi. But that the actor has refused to pay him for subsequent dresses sewn.
“I have sewn clothes for him for free. But he has refused to pay me for the ones I billed him for”, stated Bako who also claimed that the actor ignored him each time he called his mobile phone to ask for his money.
The tailor claimed that the cost of outfits he sewed for Yemi was about N200,000 but that a lady friend of his (Yemi’s) helped to settle a part of it when chasing the actor for the debt was becoming more embarrassing.
However, Yemi has denied knowing any tailor in Abeokuta. Reacting to the story, the actor said “I do not know any tailor by that name. In fact, I don’t know any tailor in Abeokuta. I have better tailors who handle my dresses in Lagos. The actor did not spare this reporter either. He ranted while the conversation lasted, calling the reporter ‘an idiot for daring to call me for such a rubbish stuff early in the morning’.
But according to Bako, Yemi would sometimes beg for more time to pay the debt, using some challenges he claimed he was facing as an excuse.
“He always begs for time when I call him for my money, saying he is facing some problems. But I need money too to run my business and what Yemi still owes me is a lot of money that can turn around my business”, stressed Bako.
